History of the house

The palace on the Grand Canal was designed by Mauro Codussi and completed at the beginning of the 16th century. It belonged to the Calergi family and then to the Vendramin family. The composer Richard Wagner rented the mezzanine and died there on 13 February 1883.

The City of Venice bought the building in 1946; since 1959 it has been the seat of the Casinò di Venezia. The Wagner Museum on the mezzanine has existed since 1995.
